Initially during Frontier Exploration the recognition of  source presence and its type (oil or gas) plus its level of thermal maturity and the extent of the active basin provides optimism for a working petroleum system. In a maturing basin mapping of source kitchens and migration pathways becomes important and effort is focused on the oil and gas yield from source kitchens
